After a week of disappointments, finding all the rivers dry, we followed the route north. We stopped to take some photos in the Stuðlagil Canyon, a spectacular basalt gorge that emerged only a few years ago when the Jökla river was redirected by the Kárahnjúkar dam. The surprise was that right at the beginning of the canyon there was a tributary on the right side of the river that had a good flow to paddle.
We crossed the river and we could see that it had good rapids in its final part and thought to fly the drone and check a couple of kilometres upstream. We couldn’t believe that we had found, a river with flow that looked good to descend. We looked at the maps and calculated the time it would take to paddle the section and decided that one day seemed enough.
The next day, we prepare all the necessary gear and start walking. After a few kilometres we reached a thirty metre waterfall that we had seen the day before, which was the beginning of the section, since further up the river it flattened out.
We looked at the waterfall but nobody saw it runnable with those flows so we put on just below the waterfall – a spectacular backdrop to start a new section, a narrow canyon with volcanic walls with the thirty-metre fall behind and a slide followed by a rapid. Below was a perfect section and after these two rapids the river opened up again and became a three kilometres of grade IV with a couple of demanding grade V rapids at the bottom.

Primer descenso del Eyvindará
Después de una semana de decepción tras decepción de encontrando todos los ríos que teníamos planeados abrir sin agua decidimos seguir la ruta hacia el norte donde paramos a hacer unas fotos en el cañón de Studlagil que hace unos años, cuando el río Jökla fue redirigido por la presa Kárahnjúkar, surgió un espectacular cañón de basalto. La sorpresa fue que justo en el inicio del cañón, había un afluente en el lado derecho del río que llevaba un buen caudal así que cruzamos el río y pudimos ver que tenía unos buenos rápidos en su parte final así que decidimos volar el dron y observar un par de kilómetros hacia arriba.
No nos lo podíamos creer finalmente habíamos encontrado un río con caudal y que se veía bien para descender así que Miramos los mapas y calculamos el tiempo que llevaría remar la sección, y decidimos que un día parecía suficiente.
Al día siguiente, preparamos todo el material necesario y comenzamos a caminar. Después de unos kilómetros llegamos a una cascada de 30 metros de altura que habíamos visto el dia anterior y que era el inicio de la sección ya que más arriba el río se aplanaba y no valía la pena.
Miramos la cascada pero nadie la vio factible con esos caudales de agua así que entramos al río justo debajo de la cascada donde había una imagen espectacular para empezar una sección nueva, un cañón estrecho de paredes volcánicas con la cascada de 30 metros detrás y un slide seguido de un rápido hacia que fuera un inicio de seccion perfecta después de estos dos rápidos el río volvió abrirse y se convertía en una sección de clase IV de tres km con un par de rápidos exigentes de grado V en la parte inferior.
A pesar de que lloviera un poco y de las bajas temperaturas este río valió mucho la pena ya que los paisajes eran espectaculares y por fin podíamos meternos por primera vez en el kayak y recuperar esa motivación que llevábamos en el inicio del viaje.
